I love travel and meeting people from different cultures and I love gardens, especially those which extend the home and encourage outdoor living.
Not surprisingly, my travels tend to be focused around gardens in different cultures.
So now I have a blog about the best garden ideas and trends from all over the world and of course I focus on gardens designed for living. Mostly because I want to hear from you about the best gardens you have seen.
Small or big, I’m always looking for that special something to entice you outside – be it into your backyard, balcony, roof garden, courtyard or patio – anywhere really as long as you’re encouraged to take up an alfresco lifestyle.
These days I am live in Australia, in Brisbane and love the tropical lifestyle which lets me live outdoors most of the year. But I have lived in Africa, England and other parts of Australia. I also traveled extensively all over the world. I have family in the US, England, New Zealand and Australia. We are nomads who have scattered across the globe.
Plants have always played an important part in my life. I studied Botany at Manchester University when I left school. I have also always been fascinated with the way people live and so and later became interested in Town and Regional Planning. More recently I’ve spent time on gardens and garden design because my home is my center.
With this background I’ve been able to work in some amazing places. Much of my working life was spent in Western Australia involved with country living and environmental management, later I went to North Queensland to the Great Barrier Reef Management Authority looking after thousands of square kilometers of ocean used and loved by millions each year.
When I left there, I moved to Sydney and my focus changed from wide open spaces to living in the inner city. I opened a garden shop, design studio and landscaping business focused on urban garden living. I held the structural landscaping license for the business and was involved with design and running the shop. I loved the beautiful things we were dealing with and the happiness we brought to our clients.
I really loved this time. Especially when we finished installing a garden and our homeowners couldn’t believe how much a great garden could change their lives. Frequently I was told,
‘We never came outside before the garden was done. But now we seldom hang out anywhere else. The children play out here all the time, we entertain out here now. It’s beautiful.’
And that’s why I bring you this blog. To show you how you too can design your own beautiful garden to live in.
Let me know what you think – I’d love to hear from you.
